With the Thomson-East Coast Line now running through the area via Tanjong Katong (TE25) and Marine Parade (TE26) reaching lender offices in the area is very convenient now.
NRIC for Singaporeans and PRs or passport for foreigners. Income proof, payslips, CPF statements, bank statements or tax filings depending on your employment type and proof of addreess. No collateral, no guarantor and no property documents needed for a standard personal loan.
If you arrive at the lender office with everything in order (documents) expect approval within 30 minutes to an hour.
Money typically is transferred the same day through cash or PayNow. The lender also needs to walk you through the loan contract and ensure you understand the terms which they’re legally required to do so plan for about one to two hours from the time you walk in.
The Ministry of Law allows licensed moneylenders to charge only three things: interest of up to 4% per month, a one time administrative fee of up to 10% of the loan amount and a late payment fee of up to $60 per missed month.
If a lender quotes additional charges such as application fees, insurance or anything labelled as a deposit that’s not legal.
Joo Chiat and the surrounding Katong area have established expat communities. Foreigners with a valid work permit, S Pass or Employment Pass are eligible. Bring your passport, pass documentation and income proof.
The borrowing cap for those earning below $20,000 annually is $1,500 across all licensed moneylenders. Earn more and you can borrow up to six months’ salary.
